英國的教育系統之中，5-16歲是強制教育，即小朋友在小學，中學階段都必須接受教育，家長有責任給小孩上學，政府也需要為小朋友提供合適的學位。當小朋友在16歲左右 (Year 11) 考GCSE後，政府要求的強制教育便完結了。
在強制教育完結以後，年青人有很多不同的選擇，包括：

- 升讀A Level 的課程，主要是以升讀大學為目標

- 找一份工作並參加與工作相關的課程，例如OCR National，BTEC，City and Guilds或其他認可的課程
- OCR National 是職業資格證書，旨在教授實用的工作場所技能。 共有3個級別：1級和2級是為14歲以上的學生設計的，3級是為16歲以上的學生設計的。 但是OCR National 沒有年齡上限。
- BTEC 代表商業和技術教育委員會。 BTEC是與工作相關的專業資格。 學生將學習相關的理論與實際應用。
- City and Guilds 倫敦市公會學院是英國的一個教育組織，建立國家技術教育體系，倫敦市公會協會也是註冊慈善機構，也是市公會和ILM資格的授予機構，提供許多已認證的資格，課程受RQF監管。

- T Level 是英國最新推出的課程，主要是給讀畢GCSE的學生，完成T Level 後，相當於3 A Level。 這些為期兩年的課程於2020年9月開始，是與雇主和企業合作開發的，其內容可滿足行業需求，並為學生做好工作，進一步培訓或學習的準備。
- T Level 是集課堂學習與實用於一身，大約有80% 是課堂學習知識與理論, 20% 在企業實習。
- T Level 在至少315小時（約45天）的行業實習期間為學生提供了課堂學習和在職經驗。
- T Level 開辦的課程包括:
